Another great read by Karen Swan, one of my favourite authors。This book was set in the world of snowboarding, and to a lesser extent surfing, both of which use similar skills。 The two main characters are Clover and Kit。 Clover is an award winning documentary maker, currently riding high with her documentary about Cory, a champion surfer who had a terrible accident that ended his career and changed his whole life, due to the actions of fellow champion surfer, Kit。Clover needs to choose another su Another great read by Karen Swan, one of my favourite authors。This book was set in the world of snowboarding, and to a lesser extent surfing, both of which use similar skills。 The two main characters are Clover and Kit。 Clover is an award winning documentary maker, currently riding high with her documentary about Cory, a champion surfer who had a terrible accident that ended his career and changed his whole life, due to the actions of fellow champion surfer, Kit。Clover needs to choose another subject for her next documentary and, through a set of circumstances, ends up shadowing Kit for her next project, who is now staging a comeback in the snowboarding world after he became persona non grata in the surfing world after Cory's accident。 Kit has been forced into it through his sponsorship deal, but doesn't want to help at all and is very antagonistic towards Clover, who he feels is partly to blame for everyone hating him。 And to be fair Clover was definitely on 'team Cory' to start with。 I did find probably the first half of the book quite frustrating, with Kit and his team, and Clover and her team, circling around each other, with lots of simmering tension。But as the story went on I just got sucked into the book, as there had obviously been more going on than met the eye between Cory and Kit, which eventually (very slowly) revealed itself as Clover and her team investigated Kit and his side of the story, albeit with absolutely no help from Kit at all。The setting itself, set mainly in the Austrian Alps, sounded beautiful, and even though I know nothing about snowboarding, I really enjoyed the storyline。 Definitely a slow build up, with lots of underlying tensions, but the story just gathered pace as it went on and was one of those books that I just had to read one more page to find out what actually did happen。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Because Kit was Kit and I don't believe for one second that he had any remorse at any time。 I did like the chalet, though and dreamt of going there as long as Kit wasn't there。。。nonetheless, a solid 3。5 / 5 rounded down to 3。 Sorry。。honesty is honesty。 I will, nonetheless, recommend this book to friends, family, patrons, book clubs, and people reading books in the park as we do … I have had some of my best conversations about books down by the Thames! As always, I try to find a reason to not rate with stars as I simply adore emojis (outside of their incessant use by "🙏-ed Social Influencer Millennials/#BachelorNation survivors/Tik-Tok and YouTube Millionaires/snowflakes / literally-like-overusers etc。 ") on Instagram and Twitter。。。 Get a real job, people!) so let's give it 🏂🏂🏂 。。。more

Thank you to Netgalley, Karen Swan and Pan Macmillan for a gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。Okay seriously, Karen Swan is ON FIRE the last couple of years with her new books! I have loved her writing from the first book I read, but she truly gets better with each book and I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT!!!I absolutely loved this story。 The characters were likeable, different from each other, fun to spend time with, and human in that they make mistakes。 Swan does NOT hold back in this one with the stuff that can happen (TW: physically violent act), but handles it so well and does not dwell on certain areas that may be harder to read about for some readers。The concept of this story is so great, and to get two sides of a story is ALWAYS fascinating。 Things are never what they seem to be and the author just loves to throw in little curve balls and I AM HERE FOR IT!! I haven’t read too many sport style stories (ironic as I enjoy sports), but loved the dip into the world of surfing and the dive into the snowboarding。 I had such an easy time picturing what she was writing about and the excitement when a boarder would land some crazy jump was definitely felt。The emotion in this story had me all over the place! It’s happy, sad, it has betrayal, anger, depression, you name it。 Kit is a very expressive person, even when he isn’t saying anything! And Clover also is unable to hide how she feels, but the two handle their emotions in different ways。I won’t spoil anything, but the conversation between Julian and Clover about Justice, and the sort-of continuation of that (at least from the reader side) between Clover and Tim was one of my favourites。 The ties that were made between actions, words, and career choices was *chefs kiss*。Honestly, if you love Karen Swan you’re probably already planning on reading this, but make SURE it is on your TBR if it isn’t already! And if you haven’t read any of Swans books, ruuuuuuuuuuuuun out and grab it on release day! 。。。more

The title and front cover of this book suggested to me a cosy, lighthearted, warming, festive Christmas book。 What I ended up reading was most definitely not that。 And whilst I was at first disappointed not to be reading said festive book, what I got instead was even better。 We follow Clover, an award-winning documentary maker, who off the back of her successful film about injured surfer Cory, tries to get to the bottom of the accident, and the man who caused it, Kit, now aiming to be a world re The title and front cover of this book suggested to me a cosy, lighthearted, warming, festive Christmas book。 What I ended up reading was most definitely not that。 And whilst I was at first disappointed not to be reading said festive book, what I got instead was even better。 We follow Clover, an award-winning documentary maker, who off the back of her successful film about injured surfer Cory, tries to get to the bottom of the accident, and the man who caused it, Kit, now aiming to be a world renowned snowboarder。This is, in no way, a slow paced book。 Right from the off you are thrown into the deep end with accidents, illness, success, failure, heartbreak; you name it, it’s in here, and you end up smack bang in the middle of this journey with Clover。 I admit, I have less than zero knowledge of surfing and snowboarding, and whilst there is some technical bits in it, you don’t have to have any prior understanding of either sport to enjoy it。 I certainly didn’t, but just took those scenes for what they were。 Throughout the book there’s this one great big unanswered question (not really a spoiler but some people may think it is if they haven’t read the blurb or anything so I’ll just put a little disclaimer here): did Kit mean to harm Cory, and if not, why was he willing to accept this narrative the press had written about him? You want to know the answer to this almost as much as Clover and her team, but throughout the 400 odd pages, each answered question throws up another, and soon you find yourself questioning everyone’s role in this tale, and whether the past can be believed。 I’ve not read any of Karen’s books before this, so had no preconceptions of what her writing was like or whether this was in the same genre as her previous books, but I think it was superb storytelling。 Anyone who can make an almost 500 page book feel thrilling and exciting to read right to the very end has my praise, and I will now keep an eye out for her previous work。 。。。more

The attraction of opposites。 Having enjoyed Karen's books before, especially Christmas at Tiffany's and The Greek Escape, I was looking forward to this one。 It was really slow to start with and the snowboarding terms were lost on me but the story picked up towards the end as the romance between and journalist Clover and snowboarder Kit blossomed。 The attraction of opposites。 Having enjoyed Karen's books before, especially Christmas at Tiffany's and The Greek Escape, I was looking forward to this one。 It was really slow to start with and the snowboarding terms were lost on me but the story picked up towards the end as the romance between and journalist Clover and snowboarder Kit blossomed。 。。。more

I've read a few of Karen's books and really enjoyed them。 Unfortunately I can't say the same for this one。Clover Phillips is a documentary maker and has won awards。 Her latest was on surfer Cory who was paralysed after an accident during a competition。 Clover is now trying to make a documentary about Kit the surfer who caused the accident。Kit is now a snowboarder and competing。 Clover and her team shadow him trying to get an interview but he refuses。There is definitely a love/hate relationship g I've read a few of Karen's books and really enjoyed them。 Unfortunately I can't say the same for this one。Clover Phillips is a documentary maker and has won awards。 Her latest was on surfer Cory who was paralysed after an accident during a competition。 Clover is now trying to make a documentary about Kit the surfer who caused the accident。Kit is now a snowboarder and competing。 Clover and her team shadow him trying to get an interview but he refuses。There is definitely a love/hate relationship going on here。For me the terms for the snowboarding were。lost on me。 I didn't have a clue which makes it really hard to picture what is going on。 Also I found the interviews they did with random people boring so I skimmed over them。The last 20% picked up when we found out why Kit had caused the accident and the revelations that followed。 Thanks to Netgalley and Pan Macmillan for the ARC in return for an honest review 。。。more

An intense and compelling read with twists aplenty as we spend time with both Clover and Kit under the guise of the documentary to understand Kit’s drive。 I loved the idea of Clover’s programmes - seeking justice for the wronged。 Her team of Johnny and Mats were great supporting characters and added that touch of family she needed around her。 The setting on the snowy peaks of Austria sounded beautiful and the excitement of the snowboarding definitely leapt from the pages。 Another brilliant read An intense and compelling read with twists aplenty as we spend time with both Clover and Kit under the guise of the documentary to understand Kit’s drive。 I loved the idea of Clover’s programmes - seeking justice for the wronged。 Her team of Johnny and Mats were great supporting characters and added that touch of family she needed around her。 The setting on the snowy peaks of Austria sounded beautiful and the excitement of the snowboarding definitely leapt from the pages。 Another brilliant read from one of my go to authors。 。。。more

Wow that is one ride and a half, from being thrown under the barrel of a wave at the start, to getting some awesome amplitude and killer tricks at the end, this is on exhilarating read。 Not least because it features the world of snow boarding on a super pipe for fabulous tricks, and to a lesser extent some of the world of surfing。 Two big sports for adrenalin junkies, which given I read this just as the Summer Olympics came to an end, and I know I will equally be obsessed come Beijing 2022 and t Wow that is one ride and a half, from being thrown under the barrel of a wave at the start, to getting some awesome amplitude and killer tricks at the end, this is on exhilarating read。 Not least because it features the world of snow boarding on a super pipe for fabulous tricks, and to a lesser extent some of the world of surfing。 Two big sports for adrenalin junkies, which given I read this just as the Summer Olympics came to an end, and I know I will equally be obsessed come Beijing 2022 and the Winter Sports - this let me have my sporting obsession continue for a bit longer。 But really it's not specifically about the sports themselves, so don't worry if you don't know your olly from your cab, your switch from your goofy, (and if some of those are more skateboarding than snowboarding terms then sorry but I was hooked on watching that too!), then honestly the sports technical bits are only a small part of the book itself。 Clover is a director whose film about Cory Albright basically ended up vilifying Kit Foley to the world。 So it becomes a bit of a shock for all, that after all that time spent essentially as Team Cory, to discover she is willing to now do a film all about Kit。 It's clear Kit has been pressganged into it and they both appear to hate each other with a passion, and what I found fascinating was seeing just how Kit's character and personality developed, as we incredibly slowly start to learn a bit more about him。 As after all he has a few loyal friends and none seem that happy about the presence of a film crew - as Kit emerges back on the world stage as a snowboarder, after spending most of his life as a champion surfer。 Set predominately in the Austrian Alps, this really is a treat of a winter book, I could barely put it down and found myself finding reasons to reach for my kindle at all times of day and night just to read more。 I couldn't get enough of the story。 I needed to know as much as Clover does, as to just what happened on that fateful day between Cory and Kit。 And I have to say the answer surprised me, as did most of the aftermath once the truth finally comes out。 This is easily another of Karen Swan's best books and I know I said that recently about The Secret Path。 This is definitely an author going from strength to strength and so long as she keeps writing books like these then I will be one incredibly happy reader! Thank you to Pan and Netgalley for this copy which i have reviewed honestly and voluntarily。 。。。more
